Kitchen fitting
Fitting a kitchen usually means taking out the old one, assembling and levelling the base and wall units, cutting and fixing worktops, cutting out for the sink and hob, fitting integrated appliances, then hanging the doors and adding plinths, end panels and handles. Laminate and timber worktops are normally cut on site. Stone and quartz are usually measured once the units are in and fitted later by the worktop company.
Plumbing, electrics, gas, tiling, plastering and flooring are often separate trades, so ask the fitter what they cover. Anyone working on a gas hob or cooker must be registered with the Gas Safe Register. A new electrical circuit, such as a new cooker circuit, is notifiable under the building regulations, so it needs a registered electrician who can certify it, or approval from building control. Moving the sink or appliances affects the plumbing and electrics, so plan that early.
If your home was built or refurbished before 2000, old textured ceilings and vinyl floor tiles may contain asbestos. Don’t break them up. Mention them to the fitter so they can be checked before anything is disturbed.
Say whether you’ve already bought the kitchen, what’s staying and what’s going.
What to include when you post
The more a fitter knows about the kitchen and the room, the easier it is to quote.
- The kitchen plan or design, if you have one, and where it’s from
- Whether you’ve bought it, or want the fitter to supply it
- Photos of the room as it is now
- Whether the old kitchen needs taking out and taking away
- Any changes to the layout, such as moving the sink, cooker or washing machine
- Gas or electric hob, and which appliances are integrated
- Worktop material
- Roughly how old the house is
- When the units are being delivered
Choosing a fitter and what to ask
Ask who handles the gas, electrics and plumbing. If the fitter brings in other trades, get their names. Any gas engineer should show you their Gas Safe ID card, which lists the work they can do. For a new circuit, ask for the electrical certificate and the building regulations compliance certificate once it’s done.
A written quote should list what’s included: stripping out, disposal of the old kitchen, fitting units, worktops, sink, appliances, plinths and panels. Tiling, plastering, flooring and decorating are often left out. Ask how long it will take and when you’ll be without a sink or cooker.
Check the units when they’re delivered, before the fitter starts, and report any damage to the supplier. Ask what guarantee the fitter gives on their own work.

Before a tradesperson starts work
Registrations
Some work must be done by a registered professional. Work on a gas boiler, cooker or fire must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, which you can check on the Gas Safe Register.
Our business check
Limited companies are checked with Companies House and sole traders upload their insurance certificate. Trade registrations are confirmed by the tradesperson when they sign up.
Get the price in writing
Ask for a written quote that sets out the work and the price before anything starts. Your contract for the work is with the tradesperson.
Questions
What people tend to ask before booking this job. For anything specific to your home, ask the tradesperson who takes it on when they get in touch.
Either works. Some fitters supply kitchens, others fit what you buy. If you're buying it yourself, it helps to have the fitter measure up first.
Ask. Gas hobs and cookers must be connected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Electric ovens and hobs may need their own circuit, and a new circuit needs a registered electrician or building control approval. Plumbing for a dishwasher or washing machine may be done by the fitter or a plumber.
Most people do. You'll be without a working kitchen for part of the job, so it's worth setting up a kettle and microwave in another room. Ask the fitter when the water and power will be off.
It varies. Some floors go down first with the units on top; others are laid up to the units and finished with the plinths. Many laminate and floating floor makers say not to fit heavy units on top. Ask the fitter and follow the flooring maker's instructions.
Usually the worktop company. They template once the base units are fitted and level, then come back to fit the tops. Ask the fitter to allow for that gap in the timetable.
