From extensions to repairs

Builders on GlosFix take on everything from a few square metres of repointing to a full single storey extension. Pick the job type that fits closest when you post. If nothing matches, choose "Something else" and describe it in your own words.

Small jobs are still worth posting. A cracked garden wall, a patch of blown render or a doorway knocked through between the kitchen and dining room are all everyday work for a local builder, and they are often the jobs people struggle to get anyone out for.

Bigger projects need more thought before anyone lifts a shovel. Most extensions, loft conversions, garage conversions and the removal of a load-bearing wall need building regulations approval. Some also need planning permission, and work on or near a shared wall can bring in the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. Those rules are separate from each other, so having one sorted doesn't cover the others.

It helps a builder a lot if you say where you are up to: whether you have drawings, whether an engineer has done calculations, and whether building control is already involved. A builder pricing from finished drawings can give you a much firmer figure than one working from a rough idea.

If your home is listed or in a conservation area, say so in the job. Different rules apply, and some work needs consent that ordinary houses don't. The council for your area can tell you whether your property is affected. Across the Gloucester area that could be one of several councils, so check which one covers your address.

Extensions, renovations and urgent repairs

Not every building job can wait for drawings and approvals. If storm damage, a collapsed garden wall, a fallen chimney stack or a vehicle hitting the house has left part of your property unsafe, choose the emergency option when you post. We text local builders straight away, day or night. Builders pay more for these jobs, so please only use it when the work really can't wait.

In a real emergency, keep people away from anything that could fall. If a wall or structure looks like it could come down onto a pavement or road, contact your council's building control team or call 999. Making the area safe comes first. A permanent repair can be planned once things are stable.

For renovation work, a bit of preparation goes a long way. Take clear photos of the problem and the area around it. You can add up to five, and they help a builder quote properly and fairly. Note how old the house is, roughly, because older buildings often need different materials. Lime mortar and breathable renders are common examples.

If your house was built or refurbished before 2000, the Health and Safety Executive advises assuming asbestos could be present. That matters if the work involves drilling, cutting or stripping out old materials such as textured ceilings, old floor tiles or boarding around pipes. Tell the builder if you know of any, or if you've had an asbestos survey done.

Once the job is posted, only the builder who buys it receives your contact details. Nobody else sees them.

Why use GlosFix to find a builder in Gloucester?

We do the searching for you. Pick the trade and job type, add a short description and your postcode, and we notify the builders on GlosFix who cover your area. It's free to post and you don't need an account.

Your details go to one builder only, the one who takes your job on. We sell each job once. There's no bidding war and no string of calls from firms you never asked to hear from. The first builder to take it gets it, and they contact you directly to talk about the work and arrange a quote.

Builders set how far they travel, so cover can be thinner in the villages further out from Gloucester. Post the job anyway. If nobody takes it on, we tell you, and it has cost you nothing to find out.

For regular jobs, your listing stays up to match when you need the work done, up to a month. We check in with you by email and text so you can take it down once the work is sorted. Emergency jobs work differently: they go out by text straight away, and if nobody has taken one on within 24 hours we remove it and let you know.

When a builder registers, we check a limited company's number against Companies House, and for sole traders we review the insurance certificate they upload. That isn't a check of their skills or the quality of past work, so it's still worth doing your own checks before you agree anything. The contract for the work is between you and the builder. GlosFix doesn't do the work or set the price.

Before a tradesperson starts work

Registrations

Some work must be done by a registered professional. Work on a gas boiler, cooker or fire must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, which you can check on the Gas Safe Register.

Our business check

Limited companies are checked with Companies House and sole traders upload their insurance certificate. Trade registrations are confirmed by the tradesperson when they sign up.

Get the price in writing

Ask for a written quote that sets out the work and the price before anything starts. Your contract for the work is with the tradesperson.

Builder questions

What people usually ask before they post a job. Can’t see yours? Email hello@glosfix.co.uk and we’ll get back to you.

List your job and we send a notification to the builders on GlosFix who cover your area. The builder who takes it on contacts you directly to discuss the work and a quote. Only that builder gets your contact details.

Yes, you are free to go direct. GlosFix saves you the searching and keeps your number to one local builder.

Yes. Emergency jobs go straight away to every builder on GlosFix who covers your area, and they are not held back by the quiet hours tradespeople set. If you think a structure could collapse onto a pavement, road or other public area, contact your council's building control team or call 999.

For regular jobs, we leave the listing active for up to a month and check in with you by email and text so you can take it down. Emergency jobs are not left sitting on the site: if nobody has taken one on within 24 hours, we remove it and let you know.

No. There is no licensing scheme for general builders in England, so anyone can trade as one. Some belong to trade bodies or schemes, which is voluntary. Ask for proof of public liability insurance, look at recent jobs similar to yours and speak to past customers if you can.

Agree this before work starts. Approval comes from the council's building control team or a private registered building control approver. Many builders handle the application, but it's your property, so make sure it's in place and that you get the completion certificate at the end. You'll need it when you sell.

It can if you're building on or at the boundary, working on a shared wall (for example cutting in a beam or removing a chimney breast), or digging foundations close to a neighbour's building. You have to serve notice on your neighbour before work starts, even if you already have planning permission and building regulations approval. There's guidance on gov.uk.
