From faulty sockets to full rewires

Small jobs and big ones can all go on here. Swapping a light fitting, adding a double socket in the kitchen, putting a light and a socket on the outside wall, or a new consumer unit and a full rewire in an older house. Pick the job type that fits, write a line or two about what you want, and the electrician who takes it on will get in touch to arrange a quote.

Some electrical work in a home is notifiable under the Building Regulations. In England that covers a new circuit, a replacement consumer unit, and any addition or alteration to a circuit in a special location, such as the area around a bath or shower. That work has to be signed off, either by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme who can self-certify it, or through building control. Most repairs and like-for-like replacements, and small additions to existing circuits outside those special locations, are not notifiable. They should still be done to the wiring regulations and certified.

If you're not sure which job type to pick, choose the closest one and explain in the summary. If nothing fits, select "Something else" and tell us what you need. Photos of the consumer unit, the wall or ceiling where the work is going, and any damage or scorch marks help the electrician see what they're dealing with before they call you.

Emergency call-outs, installations and testing

If you've lost power to part of your home, your electrics keep tripping or a socket is sparking, choose the emergency option when you post and we text local electricians straight away, day or night. Electricians pay more for these jobs, so please only choose it if the job really cannot wait. Only the electrician who buys the job receives your contact details.

Before you post a loss of power, check whether your neighbours have lost power too. If they have, it's likely a fault on the network rather than in your home. Call 105, the free power cut number for England, Scotland and Wales, which puts you through to your local network operator. If it's just your house, look at the consumer unit. If a switch has tripped and trips again as soon as you reset it, leave it off and get an electrician to find the fault.

Planned work goes on here too: new circuits, EV chargers, extractor fans, outdoor lights and sockets, smoke alarms and rewires. So does testing. An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) checks the condition of the fixed wiring in a property and grades anything that is unsafe or not up to current standards. Private landlords in England have to have one done at least every five years and give a copy to their tenants.

Add a few photos if you can, and say how old the house is and when the wiring was last looked at. It helps an electrician judge the job before they visit.

Why use GlosFix to find an electrician in Gloucester?

We do the searching for you. List what you need doing and we notify the electricians on GlosFix who cover your area. Your details go to one electrician only, the one who takes your job on, so you won't get calls from firms you never asked to hear from.

Posting is free and you don't need an account. It takes two dropdowns and a postcode, and you can add up to five photos. The first electrician to take the job gets it. There is no bidding war and no string of callers all quoting for the same work.

Electricians set how far they travel, so cover can be thinner the further out you are. Post the job anyway. If nobody local takes it on we'll tell you, and it costs you nothing to find out.

It helps to know what our checks cover. For limited companies we check the company number against Companies House. For sole traders we review the insurance certificate they upload. That is not a check of competence or qualifications, so when an electrician gets in touch, ask whether they are registered with a competent person scheme and what certificate you will get at the end. Any registered electrician should be happy to tell you, and you can look them up on the scheme's own register.

Once someone has taken your job, you deal with them directly. They quote, you agree the work with them, and your contract is with the electrician, not with GlosFix.

Registrations

Some work must be done by a registered professional. Work on a gas boiler, cooker or fire must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, which you can check on the Gas Safe Register.

Our business check

Limited companies are checked with Companies House and sole traders upload their insurance certificate. Trade registrations are confirmed by the tradesperson when they sign up.

Get the price in writing

Ask for a written quote that sets out the work and the price before anything starts. Your contract for the work is with the tradesperson.

Electrician questions

What people usually ask before they post a job. Can’t see yours? Email hello@glosfix.co.uk and we’ll get back to you.

It depends on the job. Typical ranges: consumer unit replacement £450–£1,400; electrical safety certificate (eicr) £150–£380; ev charger installation £800–£1,500; rewire £4,500–£9,500. Figures are what GlosFix customers reported being quoted; a same-day call-out costs more. Post your job free and a local tradesperson will quote for it.

List your job and we send a notification to the electricians on GlosFix who cover your area. The electrician who takes it on contacts you directly to discuss a quote.

Yes, you are free to go direct. GlosFix saves you the searching and keeps your number to one local electrician.

Yes. Emergency jobs go straight away to every electrician on GlosFix who covers your area, and they are not held back by the quiet hours tradespeople set. If your neighbours have lost power too, it's likely a network fault rather than a problem in your home, so call 105 to report a power cut.

For regular jobs, we leave the listing active for up to a month and check in with you by email and text so you can take it down. Emergency jobs are not left sitting on the site: if nobody has taken one on within 24 hours, we remove it and let you know.

Competent person schemes let registered electricians self-certify notifiable work, such as a new circuit or a consumer unit replacement, instead of you applying to building control. An electrician doesn't have to be registered, but if they aren't, notifiable work has to be signed off another way, usually through building control, which you arrange before the work starts. Ask the electrician which route they will use.

For a new circuit, a new consumer unit or a rewire you should get an Electrical Installation Certificate. For smaller additions or alterations to an existing circuit, such as an extra socket, a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate is normal. If the work was notifiable and your electrician is registered with a competent person scheme, you should also receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep them all, as you'll be asked for them when you sell.

Ask whether they are registered with a competent person scheme and check it on the scheme's register. Ask about public liability insurance, what certificate you will get, and whether the quote covers testing, making good and taking away old parts. Get the quote in writing before any work starts.
